Title: Latest Windows 10 Update
Post by: MaryLou on June 15, 2017, 04:59:31 PM
If you have gotten the latest update of Win 10, and you have not looked at the control panel yet, you're in for a big surprise!!  There is NO Control Panel!!  Programs and Features has been replaced with App and Features and it's totally different looking.   It's like looking at a foreign operating system!!  Not sure if I like it or not but it really took me by surprise!!

I'm attaching an image of what the new Apps and Features looks like.  Just when I learn my way around Windows and can find things quickly, they go and muck it up so I have to start learning all over again!!  I guess that's called progress.

For me this pm an update did the following. When I opened the pc, there was an image, asking if I liked it or not then it wanted me to sign in which I don't. Finally find where I could restart and when it came back on it was OK,
I sure wish they would leave things alone.

I have my system set to automatically update whenever Windows wants to.  I don't mind it, we need to keep up to date with things.  If I had to buy a new computer tomorrow, I'd be so lost if I didn't know what to expect.   I should take the time to read what's new!!   :wideeye:

i dont like it
i think there is one major bug in it too

if i open my  my pictures from the documents and double click on an image ...i should be taken to the program i have set to open it by default.

but i am not....now  i get a pop up box asking me which  program i want to open it... thats ok...but when i select a program from the list  and select ok ..

the pop up closes then returns to be filled in again..????????????

so i check the always open with this app...  the box closes then returns..... i cannot ...no matter what ...get windows to open my image  by double clicking

i can still drag it from the pictures to an open program.....but when i have always double clicked it is going to take some getting used to   NOT opening this way.

I always have had my images open in Windows Photo Viewer (jpg, png, gif) because I don't always know what program I want to use.  So, I just use the photo viewer which is really great!  You can crop an image and do some minor editing such as brighten, darken, and a few more adjustments without opening a full blown program.  You can also delete images and set it to do a slide show of whatever is in the folder.

It takes too long for programs to open when I just want to maybe crop an image or something like that.

Teejay, you might want to restore to just before the update.  The system creates an automatic backup before doing a Windows install.  I've only had to do that once but it worked perfectly.

Something might have gone wrong in the upgrade - that does happen, unfortunately!!

I'm just trying to stay cool!!  It's after 6pm and still 101 - HOT!!  I am re-doing the closet in the guest bedroom. It's the only one left with paneling on the walls.  Put one coat of primer on last night and a second, this morning.  Now I have to go out and buy paint to finish the walls and ceiling.  Be glad when that is done because I hate it when things are messed up!

Good luck with Win 10!!

I always have updates installed automatically, though the updates always upset the tablet settings which I have to adjust. I've just checked and my Control Panel is still there.

Shez, does it say "programs and Features" at the top of the list when you right-click on the Windows icon on the left corner of the screen?  It doesn't even have Control Panel on that list.   My  laptop has not been upgraded and has a different pop-up menu.

I really really miss that control panel.

Post by: Nicky on June 18, 2017, 04:05:37 PM
Teejay it is there.
This is how you open it and then when it is open I right click on the icon in the tasbar and choose pin to taskbar.

Where is the control panel?

Drag the mouse pointer and click on Search (you can access the Search charm through the keyboard shortcut Windows logo + Q). The search pane will pop out and from there you can type Control Panel and select it from the results to the left. Alternatively, you can simply begin typing from the Start Screen.

I want it back on my menu!!  They are hiding it to get us "prepared" for its demise. Everything is going the way of the Apps and they're turning the Microsoft language into Mac language. :(

MaryLou just pin it to the taskbar. It is right in front at all times.

Nicky, I have too much stuff on my task bar as it is.  I don't use the CP enough to keep it up front.  However, I did pin it to the Start menu so it's there on the Windows screen and out of my way.

Teejay, I plan to do the same as you - do it the "new" way and when I can't solve my problem, revert to the old way.  I know they are trying to wean us off the older methods - everything is going the way of the iphone/ipad stuff.  I would bet that in  10 years from now, hardly anyone will have a computer - they will become obsolete except for maybe the big companies.  Home users all want those things they can carry around with them at all times.

Look at the telephones...  just about everyone I know has eliminated their land lines and only have cell phones!   I can't do that because, for some strange reason, a cell phone can't get a signal when inside of a mobile home!  I used to think it was my phone but my daughter has one of those super expensive phones and it doesn't work inside either.  Everyone has to go out on the porch to use their cells. So, I will keep my land line!  I don't mind being old fashioned...  :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Here's two screenshots, one showing the control panel under Desktop and the other showing a list of what is in the Control Panel folder.   I can't see any changes to be honest. Not sure if that's a good thing or not! lol
Title: Re: Latest Windows 10 Update

Sheryl, the difference is on the popup menu when you right-click on the Windows logo.  The Control Panel is not listed anymore even though it's still there.

Same with Programs & Features.  That has been changed to Apps & Features.  If you can find the old CP (a search will find it) you can get to Programs & Features.  If you right-click on the Win logo, and click on Apps & features, you will get the same thing but in a far different format.  It looks like they are phasing out the old and infiltrating the new slowly so we don't know it's happening!  Look at my image below - you can see the difference.    I see there is also something new that I didn't install - a 3D builder.  Don't know what that is all about.

If you click on the Programs and Features then at the top will be "Control Panel". Click on it and it goes to all of the Control Panel.

Then click on the "Control Panel" to get what is shown here:

Sheryl, you still have the old popup.... it says Programs and Features as the first item on the list. The image below shows the differences in the menus.  We no longer have a "control panel".  We have "settings".

And here is the replacement for the Control panel - called Settings:

They apparently have decided that people can't read, so they are changing everything to pictures - the dumbing down of people.  They will eventually eliminate the old stuff all together.  They have left it there to give us a chance to get used to the new. Once we do, the old stuff will be history.

I spent most of yesterday updating my laptop with the latest version of Windows.  I found it interesting that the popup menu is now a dark color, but the text on it is the same as the old text - no changes!  I wonder why it's so different for different people?

I can't find things when I want then so now I type it in the search box.   I would think they would update everyone the same when they do it. :elmo:

Kind of makes you wonder if they know what they're doing!!  As I said, I updated my laptop and it still has the old menu but the new color - very dark gray.

Windows 10 may be a good system but too many chages occuring with updates that should not be changed... so I have to redo as it was, i.e the default programs
Title: Re: Latest Windows 10 Update

So far, I haven't had any problems with my selected defaults when Windows does an update but it would be nice if they left us a little note to say what's different.  When they update, I don't usually go exploring unless something is necessary - then is when I realize that I don't know where to find it!  At least they had the fortitude to provide a search box!

Does anyone use Cortana?  I rather like it for quick things but I don't use it often because it opens the Edge browser and I don't want that browser!  It's too bad we can't configure Cortana to open with a browser of our choice.

Microsoft must have gotten word about this because it does not work.  I installed EdgeDeflector but it opens Edge and Bing.   I don't know why these companies force you to use things you don't want. They know you don't have a choice and they do whatever they want.  Darn!!

I haven't actively searched for it but am going to!  On the other hand, I don't use Cortana because I have Alexa and she knows just as much as Cortana.  :laugh8:
