How to Create a Spiral
« on: August 06, 2016, 08:31:16 PM »
Since Affinity Designer doesn't have the Spiral feature at the moment, here is an easy work-around.  I cannot take credit for the idea though. I got it from a silent video and added words so we could all understand it.

Set the Fill color to None, Stroke to 10pt. and Cap to Square Cap.
Hold down the Shift key and draw out an ellipse.

On the context menu, click Convert to Curves.

Using Node tool, drag a box around top and right nodes.
Click Break Curve on the Context menu.
Using the Node tool, Drag box around the same two nodes, then press delete.
You are left with a lower left curve.
Select move tool - Hold down CTRL key, drag curve to the right to copy.
Select the Transform panel. -  type 90 in the Rotation box.
Hold down Shift key and drag upper right corner of curve inward to make it smaller.
Press CTRL+C to copy the curve.
Now, press CTRL+J multile times to Power Copy and Rotate.
If your lines don't connect perfectly, zoom in and manually edit them.

Use the Move tool to drag a box around the entire spiral, then select the Note tool and click Join Curves on the Context menu.

Now you can change the stroke width to whatever you want.

Enjoy!!

I hope some of you give this a try. Would like to see your results.  And, you will also learn a new technique - the CTRL+J (power rotate) which is fun to use.   Sorry it took so long to do!  Figuring out a video with no sound was a task in itself. Then putting it into words along with trying to capture screens and then putting it into a format here that everyone could read.

If they do not include a spiral in the released version, I will turn this into a tutorial.  If you make a spiral, store it in your Assets panel. Then you can always duplicate it, resize it, change the color, etc.  You can do a lot with having just one little spiral!

that is press Ctrl and  tap the letter j  each tap of j while holding Ctrl  will give you a copy of the curve spiral shape.

Joy, I know this works, I've done it many times over.  You need to post a screen capture of your screen when something doesn't work so we can see what is going wrong.   The box doesn't stay there. What it does is select the two nodes for you.   Just drag the square around the two nodes, the square will disappear but it will select the correct nodes to break and to delete.

I made a couple of different versions of your tutorial. I couldn't get it to duplicate properly when I tried it yesterday, but it worked fine today.
