Just reading this, MaryLou and I have to say that having only used 'photo' programs previously, I haven't seen the 'workspace' area used in this way, so I'm the opposite and don't automatically use it in AD! Lol!
I tend to use layers and turn them on/off as I go).
But .... (and I really don't know if this helps), perhaps it may work for you to have have two documents open, (same size and resolution). You could use one to have your various elements and the other your main working document. You could then switch between them by their tab and use copy and paste to bring the elements in when you want them.
