The Queen and Sir David - SherylC
« on: April 16, 2018, 01:03:06 pm »
Closing down for the night now as the documentary of the Queen and Sir David Attenborough's Canopy walk around the Queen's garden will be starting on tv shortly.

Apparently it is full of good humour and probably the Queen at her best. Would recommend watching it if you can.

:laugh1:  I was thinking of you when I posted the message thinking I know Teejay won't be watching! lol

It was interesting but didn't quite grab me in the way I expected it to.  :lol05:

I'll keep watch to see if it happens to play over here.  I'm sure I would like it.  Maybe I can get Teejay to translate for me!   :laugh1: :laugh1:

I think you would like it MaryLou.  It's quite funny in parts. Both parties have a great sense of humour. Not sure what Teejay's translation would be!  :lol05:

I know you guys probably think I'm just kidding but honest, I'm not.  I have a very difficult time understanding people who have a different accent. I suspect it may be because I'm a bit hard of hearing to start with and when words are not said the way my ears expect to hear them, they don't translate.

I love some of the English movies but I struggle with trying to figure out what's going on.  Some, I just give up on and others, I can tell by the acting what's happening.

Many years ago, I had a pen pal (prior to computers) and she lived in London.  I always had trouble trying to interpret her letters.  She wrote in her accent. Instead of writing "he", she would write "eh".    Then, of course, there were the strange words, loo, trolly tram, and a few more. Actually it was fun because she didn't understand me either so we sent a lot of pictures back and forth!

I will watch for the show to come on BBC - would love to see it.   :yay:

LOL. I have problems trying to understand the Scottish accent on TV to be honest but as many people do. Also the Liverpuddlian accent can be strong. the Welsh accent is also strong especially in the Valleys where I am from originally. I have lost my Welsh accent since moving to the big basin...Cardiff almost 50 yrs ago!

I loved corresponding with penpals across the seas. Although my closest penpal lived only 40 minutes away in Barry Island. We met in hospital 40 years ago and giggled every time we were together. We wrote for many years but lost touch as you sometimes do.

Sometimes Londoners say eh at the end of sentences as a reference to "huh" which most of us understand. Cocknies have a very strong accent.

Nowadays the film industry has cut down on dubbing which makes it hard to hear the actors let alone understand what they are saying. Good job for subtitles!

Teejay, you make me giggle "Old Trout". She'll 'av ur 'ead orf and ban you to the tower. Bet you're looking forward to Charles taking up the Throne: teheheh. Not sure what Camilla's role will be but she can't be Queen I don't think....maybe an escort of some kind!!!!!  Or perhaps that ship has already sailed.......my lips are sealed! lol

Well, to say, Oxford english is easy to lip read....or not always when they keep the lips almost shut, but mostly for me as and alltime almost deaf, Oxford english is easyyy (no cockney, please! :lol05: ). Americans from Texas and around there, ohmyg.. ...impossible, they draaaag their words out far too much!  :lol05: Danish isn't easy for me either, they talk down in the trouth like the dutch do.
All in all, it is NOT easy to be hard of hearing in any language...not even for those who use sign language...different in all countries!

It must be tough Grethe. Yes Texans have a very long drawn out accent.  Accents intrigue me. It is the Canadian (softer than the American accent), the Aussie and NZ accent that I like most of all.

Yes, there should be a universal sign language shouldn't there? That would make sense but probably feasible. When I was a studying Complimentary Healthy, I also learned Finger Sign Language as a starter course for BSL (British Sign Language) as I often got clients who were hard of hearing. I've forgotten it now.

Elizabeth II has already pointed her finger on Charles, so by law, Camilla will be a queen!

Not sure if Camilla will be Queen. I think that ambition could be blocked by Prince William and Harry. More likely to be  HRH the Princess Consort. Not sure as it's all very complicated. What a to do! lol
